Kaempferia gingers are low growing terrestrial gingers, often refered to as peacock gingers. This is due to the colorful foliage that they often have. This form called Kaempferia Grande is one of the larger of the species producing leaves over one foot long and around 6 inches wide. The leaves are dark green with silver bands through out the leaf. The undersides of the leaves are a dark red to maroon color. A great plant for a shady area only reaching 1 or 2 feet tall at most. Kaempferias also produce beautiful flowers that look almost orchid like. They also tend to refect light and shimmer. Often in small clusters sometimes when the plant is dormant or just after the foliage has formed. I grow and treat Kaemferia gingers similar to Caladium bulbs. They grow great in the ground or in a pot and in winter they go dormant and need to be kept dry and above freezing. The following year they are back up and multiply. Most Kaempferia plants are hardy to zone 8 and grow best in rich soil in shade or partial sun. Also makes a great container plant on a shaded porch.

Plants sold in 4 1/2 inch pots.
